Leaving Verona, the town of Romeo and Juliet, with its marvellous monuments full of history such as the Arena, the Castelvecchio and the Arche Scaligere, you soon reach the first villages of the well known Valpolicella.
This valley offers boundless panoramas and enchanting countryside with marvels of nature, descending from the 1,500 meter heights of Corno d'Aquilio to soft rounded foothills and down to fertile cultivated valley floors.
Famous for its excellent red wines such as Amarone and Recioto, the Valpolicella is not just about wine! The natural, historic, artistic and economic heritage of the region can be seen in the beautiful villas throught the area, in the Romanesque monuments or also in the ancient villages such as Negrar, Fumane and San Pietro in Cariano.
Heading towards Lake Garda, you enter a hilly setting where vineyards and olive trees abound and you begin to feel the mild Mediterranean climate of this area.
Continuing along the eastern banks of the lake you can witness the striking beauty of the small towns reflected in the waters, many of them constructed around antique fortifications used by the Scaligeri and the Venetians, such as Lazise, Bardolino and Peschiera, a Serenissima military stronghold.
Leaving the southern part of the lake, discover the outskirts with its ancient hills formed by the Garda glacier and the Mincio Regional Natural Park.
Driving along the course of the Mincio River is the beautiful town of Valeggio sul Mincio- its Castle offering stupendous views of the plain. Nearby is Borghetto, a medieval romantic village (included in the club of "Italy's most Beautiful Villages") with the Visconteo Bridge crossing the Mincio river.
A brief visit to Castellaro Lagusello, a small medieval village, before returning to Verona.
