The Northern lakes tour

PRESENTATION
There are many reasons for choosing a holiday destination, with differing tastes and expectations to satisfy. But special places still exist, small treasures where nature, history and man have produced an alchemy of extraordinary effect, a kaleidoscope of landscapes, colours and architecture that are sure to please: in the territory of the Northern lakes: Lake Maggiore, Lake Como, Lake Garda and the tiny Lake Orta.

This itinerary starts from the romantic Lake Orta, a miniature jewel of art and history delightfully set at the foothills of the Alps. Its handsome palazzi and its magnificent Italian-style gardens have been appreciated since the time of poets and writers such as Honoré de Balzac and Friedrich Nietzche.
After a short visit to the beautiful village of Orta San Giulio, your trip continues to the Borromean Gulf on Lake Maggiore. The gently sloping shores are dotted with scenic villas and magnificent gardens while at the centre of the lake the Borromean islands represent small pearls of natural beauty, loved by nobles and intellectuals throughout history.
Heading north towards the upper part of the lake, stupendous views await you. Here the lake narrows and sheer cliffs plunge dramatically into the water.
After having visited the hinterland along the "valley of the artists", you can follow the eastern shores of the lake to Angera with its beautiful Rocca and then continue on. After visiting the the relaxing area of the lakes of Varese, the "walled city" of Como is the next stop, on the discovery of Lake Como.
One way to immerse yourself in the romantic atmosphere is a visit to the sumptuous villas built by the nobility of Lombardy along the coast of Lake Como from the XVI through the XVIII century to perpetuate the family name.
Of the beautiful and famous residences lining the shores of the lake, Villa d’Este at Cernobbio and Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo are highlights.
Continuing towards the northern part of the lake, the number of villas and gardens diminish; Romanesque monuments such as the Abbey of Piona and a new, natural landscape of Valsassina, appear.
Leaving Lake Como, you can visit Lake Iseo with its green island of Monte Isola and Franciacorta, where the sparkling wine takes its name.
Next follows Lake Garda with its mild Mediterranean climate, a favourite of the "mitteleuropea" elite since the nineteenth century.
On the shores you can stroll through small towns full of art, history and colours; outside visit wine cellars and oil press with excellent wines and oils.
Of particular note: the town of Sirmione with its Grotte di Catullo, Peschiera, a Serenissima military stronghold , the small villages of Bardolino and Lazise. A "must" is a visit to Punta San Vigilio, the most romantic and scenic spot of the lake.
Lake Garda represents the last stop on this tour of historic, artistic and natural wonders.
