Euganean and Berici Hills tour

PRESENTATION
The Euganean and Berici Hills, ancient volcanic islands, once surrounded by the sea and now basking in the middle of the Veneto plain, although untamed in places, are in certain spots as pristine as Tuscany.
Appreciated since Roman times, with the creation of roadways and introduction of new crops, the beauty of the Hills inspired the genius of Martial and Juvenal; the castles and towns evocative of a more affluent age.
Influence of the nearby art cities of Padova and Vicenza can be seen in the numerous structures that preserve that atmosphere of the Renaissance. Here you can imagine life in the times of the Estensi court or wander through the sumptuous villas owned by the nobles of the XV century Republic of Venice, their splendour still ablaze.

Starting from the Venice Lagoon with its marvellous villas, you soon reach Padua (Padova) , the university town of the Veneto. Nicknamed "La Dotta" ("The Learned") the city is world-renowned for its masterpieces such as the XIV century Basilica of Saint Anthony, the Scrovegni Chapel, the Palazzo della Ragione and the Prato della Valle.
Only few kilometres south of Padua, enter the Regional Park of the Euganean Hills; with villas, spas, stately old buildings and country restaurants, they represent the ideal place to relax while drinking a glass of local wine or enjoying a traditional dish.
The noteworthy Benedictine Abbey of Praglia, the magnificent Italian-style gardens of Villa Barbarigo, the perfectly preserved Valbona Castle, the beautiful medieval city of Arquà Petrarca are only a few of the many cultural and artistic gems of this area.
Driving from one hill to another in this stunning landscape you reach the Berici Hills, famous for its variety of wholesome and appetising dishes. Trattorias abound here, offering typical foods from the tradition of Vicenza: from sopressa (a type of salami) generally eaten with a slice of grilled polenta "polenta brustolà", to baccalà alla Vicentina (cod with soft polenta), to capponi alla canevera (capon), to castrato con risi e bisi (rice and peas with broth), to the endless types of ''risotti'.
A journey to Berici Hills and the nearby Vicenza is a direct contact with the history of architecture: in fact, Vicenza is a city included in the Unesco World Heritage List thanks to the masterpieces of Andrea Palladio, the famous Italian architect who enriched the town and the surrounding area with sixteen marvellous villas in the XVI century . To name a few: Villa Capra "La Rotonda", Villa Valmarana ai Nani and Villa Trissino Trettenero, his very first creation.
A fitting place to end your journey, here in Vicenza, in the Hills of Veneto.
